Paddle On!

I was scrolling through old posts from last summer trying to find one that portrayed just how much I HATED summer last year. I did a pretty good job at hiding how absolutely miserable I was. Apparently we had a pretty fun summer. So....just so you all know, I HATED last summer. Not because of all the cool things we did, but because our house was literally a sauna! If I were in Finland, that would have been great...but I was in hot, dry, deserty Utah. Sure we had fun, but I DREADED coming home. The heat is all I remember. We got our swamp cooler to work a few times, but it would last only a few hours before spewing water all over the place. Parker slept in a diaper. I won't tell you how we slept. Joe and I finally decided that central air was 100% necessary for my sanity as a stay-at-home mom, so last fall we got it. I dreamed ALL. COLD. WINTER. LONG. of the return of my normally favorite season--summer! Not a single day has gone by this summer that I haven't praised the heavens for central air. Walking into a cool house is the cherry on top of every hot, fun thing we do outside. Last year, I was thrilled to say goodbye to August and hello to a loooooong winter. This year couldn't be more opposite. I am holding on with every ounce of strength I can muster to the hot days of summer.
Last Monday night we went with Joe's parent's and grandma for a little paddle boat excursion. What I thought was going to be a relaxing ride around the lake turned into a hot, sweaty, crazy good workout! We had a blast! We came home tired, sore, and HOT! But thankfully the heat isn't really what we remember. We remember enjoying the beautiful, outdoorsy summer that living in Utah provides, along with great company! Thank goodness for WONDERFUL in-laws. And once again, praise the heavens for central air!

I do the same thing sometimes with my blogs. I will remember a particularly miserable month or two and I will see that all corresponding blogs for those months are fun and cheery. Must just be nice to portray happiness even if one isn't feeling it. I'm glad you have air. I can't even imagine a Utah summer without.

Girl, I totally know what you are talking about! Our first two years of marriage, our Air conditioner did not work! so during long hot CA summer days we would be outside rather than inside where the heat was stifling!
I know love having a working AC especially now that we live in the humidity of NC, it makes outdoor activities more fun when you know you have a nice cool house to return to :D

I am right there with ya! I have ABSOLUTELY enjoyed are central air more than anything! I remember last summer being sick and pregnant and going to a friends house that had a working swamp cooler...I was a big ball of sweat and exhausted just from visiting her! I remember coming home an lying down on my bed and loving just freezing in the central air, it is so AWESOME!!!

At least you had your basement refuge last summer. Too bad you couldn't sleep down there. And thanks for not telling us how you and Joe slept.

Good thing you have air conditioning this year, or mom and dad would have to get a hotel. Actually, that would be kinda nice... Maybe you should tell dad your air conditioning is broken.

I love Michael's comment...anytime you want to keep people out of your house...just tell 'em your AC is out!

I felt so bad for you last summer! We had a couple of months with no AC in our Sandy house and it was crap! Spencer was 5 months old...But I'm with you...let's just erase that aweful memory!

There are few things nicer than coming in from 100 degree heat to a nice, cool house...and then tucking into nice, cool sheets...ahhh!

I love the paddle boat. I can't wait for our turn in a couple of weeks. What a picturesque little lake! How is it that you look so perfect in every picture!! You are so cute!

I love central air. Last year when we had just moved that was the FIRST thing we added, even the yard waited till late summer. Somethings are worth the expense.:)

Oh Robyn, I never would have known that you were miserable last summer. I'm so glad you have central air now. I will never want to live without it again. Back in the old days, every summer was like your last one. You always seem to make lemonaid out of lemons. I love you lots. Cute picture of you and Avery. I want to kiss those cheeks.

That paddle boat looks like lots of fun! I remember how much you hated last summer! I'll never have another house without central air. And...whoever came up with those awful swamp coolers?!

If you were in Finland last summer, it would have been better. Because I would have been visiting for weeks and weeks. Please move there. Please?

And those paddle boats? Crazy hard workout.

I don't know how people in Utah live with those swamp coolers! I don't know how you did it...I would have been a grouch!

I know what you're talking about. With our old house it was 1 year with central air that worked about 10% of the time, one year with NOTHING at all, and then one year with a less-than-fabulous swamp. I'm living the dream now! Central air that works every day and keeps our house at a steady temp! Life doesn't get much better than that. Your paddling trip looks like a lot of fun. You guys are always doing such great things!

That house didnt have air??!!! Joe, I officially shake my finger at you and say "shame, shame, shame." If my daddy knew that you had put Robyn in a home with no heat, he would personally come up there, put you in a sack and haul you off to the woods and tan your hide. Yup. You should hang your head and tell her you are sorry and go buy her some jewlery. Right now. Go.

Oh my gosh Robyn I didn't realize how you suffered. That was just normal for us older folks and I remember when we first put our swamp cooler on top and the hallway was really cool except when the temperature was nearing 100. I am so thankful for AC it has been a lifesaver. Love ya!!

Who is Allie....she's got some real good common sense! I think you should make Joe read her comment!

Aaaaamen about air conditioning. My trialor in LaGrand, OR was so hot. I usually just stayed outside with the kids until it started to get dark and/or cooled off. I never really looked forward to winters at the time though, because they were just as bad in the opposite direction. Brrr! :)

Ahh, the modern conveniences and the difference they make!
Cute pictures of your outing.

I know how you feel- sometimes I stay at work with the AC just so I don't have to go home to a hot apartment. I love summer and I am sorry to see it go.

OH MY GOSH, you lived without AC for a whole SUMMER?!?!?! I totally look up to you, how did you do that? I would have died.

Talk to me about central air when it's 114 outside!!! I know I know I "choose" to live here but really I don't have a choice. It's where the work for my hubby is so it's where I am. I love Utah summers, the mild weather makes me so happy! Sounds like you guys are enjoying it the way it should be enjoyed with family.

AMEN!! I hear you on the central air thing. It's crazy humid here so the central air doesn't just cook us off, it dries us too.

Your boat trip looks like a lot of fun! I love the picture in the bottom right corner of you and Avery. Very cute!

You are such a fun writer! I love reading your blogs!
